Basically a reticle is a system of lines, dots, or cross-hairs in your scope that appear superimposed on your target and help you line up your vision to your target. We will be discussing briefly each type of reticle. In addition, you can find all types of reticles at low prices and the top brands like Swarovski, Leupold, Nightforce, Trijicon, Zeiss Reticle and many more on our website. Simply check below (we give a small example below, check the side of our page, OR use our SEARCH function above right to find the specific item you desire. |
The Basic Reticle
Basic reticles give you an aiming point. Depending on the manufacturer, it can be called "fine crosshairs" "duplex" "nikoplex" "30-30" "heavy duplex" or something similar.
No matter what they are named, they all give you a good central aiming point. A basic, yet thick reticle does show up better for sighting when used in the bush. Thick basics are used most often in hunting rifle scopes.
Alternatively, fine crosshairs can become invisible when used with brush type backgrounds, yet the do let you adjust your sighting quicly because of the small amount of target the crosshairs overlap.
A Bullet Drop Compensating (BDC) Reticle
A BDC reticle when setup properly helps the shooter by "compensating" for the speed of the bullet and how fast it will drop to the ground. Most of the popular reticles available today have some type of BDC reticle already in them.
Popular rifle scopes like the Swarovski BR, the Nikon BDC, the Zeiss Rapid Z, and the Leupold Boone have compensating reticles. It should be noted that a way of target range estimation is required if using a BDC reticle.
The MilDot Reticle
A mildot reticle can also be used to calculate distance. The "mil" in mildot means milradian. For calculation efforts, a "mil" in a reticle means 3.6" at 100 yards, 7.2" for 200 yards, etc. Using a mildot reticle takes quite a bit of calculation on the part of the shooter to get the right distance. It is easier to use a laser rangefinder which is quicker and more accurate. Because of this, mildots are very rarely used anymore.
An Illuminated Reticle
Now, many scopes come with lighted (illuminated) reticles. With an illuminated reticle your crosshairs are more visible in low light. It has been recommended by experts to buy a more expensive illuminated scope reticle because the cheaper ones often have the lowest level of brightness set too bright. This keeps your own eyes ability to adjust to low light from working as well. Sometimes they are so bright you can not even see your target.
The better quality illuminated reticle manufacturers have worked diligently to solve the problem of too much brightness with extremely adjustable digital controls -- hence the reason for more cost.
